Story Definition of Done (DoD) Checklist

Purpose

Comprehensive self-assessment framework for developers to validate completed work before marking stories as ready for review. Ensures quality delivery, maintainable code, and complete implementation of all requirements.

Required Validation Context

Before proceeding, ensure you have:

  • Completed story implementation
  • All acceptance criteria addressed
  • Code committed and pushed to repository
  • Local testing completed successfully
  • Documentation updates prepared

Quality Standards

This checklist ensures adherence to enterprise-grade quality standards:

  • Functionality: All requirements met and tested
  • Code Quality: Maintainable, secure, and well-documented
  • Testing: Comprehensive coverage with passing tests
  • Standards: Compliance with project conventions and best practices

1. Requirements & Acceptance Criteria Fulfillment

Functional Requirements Validation

  • All functional requirements specified in story completely implemented
  • Each acceptance criterion individually tested and confirmed working
  • User workflow from start to finish verified manually
  • All specified user interface elements implemented correctly
  • Business logic requirements fulfilled as documented

Feature Completeness Assessment

  • Integration with existing features tested and confirmed working
  • Data flow through system verified end-to-end
  • API contracts and interfaces implemented per specification
  • User experience matches design and usability requirements

Edge Case & Error Handling

  • Boundary conditions tested (empty inputs, maximum values, etc.)
  • Error conditions handled gracefully with appropriate user feedback
  • Invalid input validation working correctly
  • System behavior under stress or unusual conditions verified
  • Fallback mechanisms tested and functioning properly

Requirements Status: {{requirements_completion_status}} Remaining Issues: {{remaining_requirements_issues}}

2. Code Quality & Standards Compliance

  • Code formatting automated tools (linters, formatters) passing
  • No new linting errors or warnings introduced

Security Best Practices

  • Input validation implemented for all user inputs and API endpoints
  • Authentication and authorization requirements properly implemented
  • Sensitive data handling follows security protocols
  • SQL injection and XSS protection measures applied
  • No hardcoded secrets, API keys, or sensitive information in code

Code Maintainability

  • Code is well-structured with appropriate separation of concerns
  • Complex logic documented with clear, helpful comments
  • Functions and methods appropriately sized and single-purpose
  • Code duplication minimized through proper abstraction
  • Technical debt minimized or appropriately documented

Technology Stack Compliance

  • Approved technologies and versions used as specified
  • Framework patterns and conventions followed consistently
  • Third-party libraries used appropriately and securely
  • Database interactions follow established patterns
  • API design consistent with project standards

3. Testing Excellence & Coverage

Unit Testing Implementation

  • Unit tests written for all new functions and methods
  • Test coverage meets project standards (typically 80%+ for new code)
  • Tests cover both positive and negative scenarios
  • Mock objects and test doubles used appropriately
  • Tests are maintainable and follow testing conventions

Integration Testing Coverage

  • Integration points with existing systems tested
  • API integration tests implemented where applicable
  • Database integration tests verify data operations
  • Third-party service integrations tested (with mocks where appropriate)
  • Cross-component functionality verified through tests

End-to-End & System Testing

  • Critical user journeys tested end-to-end
  • Full-stack functionality verified through automated tests
  • User interface interactions tested where applicable
  • Performance characteristics verified meet requirements
  • System behavior under realistic load conditions tested

Test Quality & Reliability

  • All tests passing consistently and reliably
  • Tests provide meaningful failure messages when they fail
  • Test data setup and teardown handled properly
  • Tests are independent and can run in any order
  • Flaky or unreliable tests identified and fixed

Testing Status: {{testing_completion_status}} Test Coverage: {{test_coverage_percentage}}%

4. Functionality Verification & Manual Testing

Manual Testing Completion

  • Functionality manually verified through complete user workflow
  • All user interface elements tested across target browsers/devices
  • Mobile responsiveness verified if applicable
  • Accessibility features tested (keyboard navigation, screen readers)
  • Performance acceptable during manual testing

Cross-Platform & Environment Testing

  • Functionality tested in development environment
  • Integration tested with staging environment (if applicable)
  • Browser compatibility verified for supported browsers
  • Mobile device testing completed if applicable
  • Different user roles and permissions tested where relevant

User Experience Validation

  • User workflow intuitive and matches expected behavior
  • Error messages clear and helpful to users
  • Loading states and progress indicators working properly
  • Data validation provides appropriate user feedback
  • Overall user experience polished and professional

Manual Testing Status: {{manual_testing_status}} UX Issues Identified: {{ux_issues_found}}

5. Build, Deploy & Configuration Management

Build System Integration

  • Project builds successfully without errors or warnings
  • All linting checks passing without issues
  • Automated tests integrated into build process and passing
